Albuquerque Citizenship Lawyer

Becoming a Citizen through Naturalization

For many, becoming a citizen of the United States will be the fulfillment of a dream or the achievement of an important goal. Being a citizen is normally accomplished by birth or through the process of naturalization. Nearly any child who is born in the U.S. will automatically be a citizen, no matter the immigration status of the parents. If one or both of the parents are U.S. citizens, many children born outside the U.S. automatically become a citizen of our country. In some cases, when parents become naturalized their children will automatically become citizens.

One of the most common paths to citizenship, however, is through naturalization. The attorneys at Maney & Gordon, P.A. have over 100 years of successful experience in assisting individuals with their citizenship needs, including guiding them through the naturalization process. A dedicated Albuquerque immigration attorney from our firm is ready to begin the process by reviewing your situation as it currently stands and helping you to determine what will be required to meet the qualifications set out by Congress to become a citizen.

Citizenship Requirements

In order to be naturalized, the usual requirements include that you must have continuous residence in the U.S. for at least 5 years. If your spouse is already a U.S. citizen, you must meet the residency requirement for a period of a minimum of 3 years. You will also need to live in the immigration district where your application will be filed. Eligibility also requires that you be able to read, write and speak English, be of good moral character (no criminal record) and have a positive view towards the U.S. Additionally, you must know U.S. history and government and have an allegiance to and understand the principles of the United States Constitution.

If any of these requirements are lacking, a proven lawyer from our firm will work with you to provide the best resolution possible in your individual situation.

There can be many barriers along the way but we fight hard for your case, helping to file important documents, preparing and filing your application, successfully resolving issues that come up along the way and getting you fully ready for your interview with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
