Student Visa Qualifications
A foreign national visiting the U.S. by way of a visitor visa may be able to engage in a short-term course of study while in the country. This is permitted only if the individual does not spend more than 18 hours per week doing so. If the individual wishes to pursue a course of study that will demand a time investment of more than 18 hours per week, it will be necessary for the individual to obtain a student visa. This visa is specifically for
nonimmigrants wishing to pursue academic study or training in the U.S., and there are a number of qualifications that applicants must possess before the visa is granted. These include:
- Applicants must have a residence outside the U.S. that they intend to keep
- Applicants must be proficient in the English language, or actively training to attain proficiency
- Applicants must be enrolled in a study program related to academics, rather than vocation or employment
- Applicants must be enrolled as full-time students at the institutions where they are studying
- The institutions that the applicants study at must be approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
